Fiber - are you consuming the right kind? Is it impacting your health?
Quite possibly my favourite snack and definitely one of my favourite healthy fats. I have been known to consume up to 3 in a day… still learning moderation with this one. 😉
Here’s my health tip for the day:
Do you take Metamucil for fiber? Always read the ingredient list on every product you use! Let's be informed consumers.
Metamucil has 3 grams of fiber per serving, along with maltodextrin, artificial orange flavour, yellow number 5, and aspartame!
The active fiber component in Metamucil is something called psyllium. I always tell patients that if they are wanting a psyllium fiber in their diet (if it is clinically needed), why not simply purchase a bag of psyllium fiber? Pure psyllium won’t contain all the additives that are not good for your health. You can find this at the grocery store or even Bulk Barn.
Note: some Metamucil products (capsule vs. powder) have other ingredients, always read the label to make an informed choice.
To put this in perspective, one serving of Metamucil has 3 grams of fiber, whereas half an avocado (150 grams) contains a whopping 10 grams of fiber! One medium artichoke has 10 grams of fiber, one cup of broccoli has 5 grams of fiber – the list of fiber rich foods is endless.
I would also caution that you speak with your naturopathic doctor about the appropriate timing and appropriate type of fiber needed for you – soluble vs. insoluble fiber. Sometimes if you are taking psyllium fiber (or other dense fiber products) it can bind up your medication which could impact the absorption and therapeutic benefits of your medication. Are you taking a fiber supplement for constipation? Suffering with digestive upset? There are many other factors that could be at play. Speak with your healthcare provider about how you can get relief!
